App Development Cost Calculator (2026)

Estimates assume your app is built with AI coding tools, because that is now how most software gets made: 90% of the technology professionals in Google's 2025 DORA survey use AI at work. What agencies typically quote sits alongside, so you can see the spread before you sign.

The code got cheap. The rest of the app didn't.

Every rate is sourced and dated; both hour models are published. Checking a quote? Read how agencies price app development. No email, no sales call.

Why the code shrank and the rest held steady
  • Design: Partly. AI speeds variants and assets; product decisions and user testing do not compress.
  • App and backend build: Yes, the most. Agent-assisted coding and modern scaffolding produce screens, CRUD and glue quickly.
  • Auth, payments and integrations: Partly. Managed providers and generated glue help; webhooks, edge cases and security settings still take careful hours.
  • Code review and hardening: Grew. More generated code means more to read, test for security and harden before release.
  • Testing across devices: No. Devices, edge cases and store sandboxes take about as long as they did.
  • Release and app-store cycles: No. Store review runs on Apple's and Google's timetable, not yours.
  • Project and stakeholder time: Partly. A smaller team needs less coordination, but decisions, sign-offs and meetings run at human speed.

Hours: both columns are this site's published models, built separately. AI-native: a small team using AI coding tools (range 0.8x to 1.5x hours). Agency: the effort norms agencies quote (range 0.85x to 1.35x). Methodology · Sources

Planning estimate, not a quote. A real quote depends on a written scope; use this to check one, with five questions to ask before you sign.

Built AI-native (2026) · agencies quote $65,000$40,000Breakdown

How the estimate works

  1. Two hour models. The primary column is a bottom-up model for a small team building with AI coding tools. The second is the effort agencies typically quote, in line with the ranges agencies publish. Each is built feature by feature, separately; neither is a percentage of the other. Both are our published assumptions, not survey data.
  2. Where the hours go. Both columns are split into the same categories: design, build, integrations, code review, testing, store release and project time. AI compresses the build most; testing, release and stakeholder time barely move.
  3. Rates. Each workstream is priced at the rate for the team you choose. Every rate option names its publisher and the date we read it. See all the rates side by side.
  4. Range and time. The AI-native range runs from 0.8x to 1.5x its hours (newer practice, wider band); the agency range from 0.85x to 1.35x. Timeline assumes 32 productive hours per person per week.

Accent bar: AI-native hours. Grey bar: agency-quoted hours. Both are this site's published hour models, priced at Clutch's US development company band midpoint. Where a line marked not compressed still differs, it is because the agency model sets testing and project time as shares of its larger build hours. Methodology

"Built AI-native" uses this site's AI-native hour model at the US agency rate; the other columns use the agency-quoted hour model at each named rate (Latin America at a 50/50 junior and senior mix). The rates behind the calculator

Published sources disagree, so the calculator lets you choose rather than averaging them into one number. The gap between them is the gap between hiring an employee, hiring a US firm and hiring offshore.

Mid is the midpoint of a published band, or the median wage for BLS. In-house rates are BLS wages divided by the ECEC wage share of 70.0%; that division is our arithmetic.

For a sense of what real projects have cost, Clutch reports that the average cost of app development projects on its platform is $90,780.11, that mobile app projects usually take about 11 months, and that most projects reviewed there fall between $10,000 and $49,999. Those are averages of reviewed projects, not a price for yours.

Questions

How accurate is this app development cost calculator?+

It is as accurate as its inputs. The hourly rates come from named sources read on 2 October 2026 (BLS wage data, Clutch pricing guides and the Accelerance 2026 rate survey). The hours come from two models this site publishes line by line on the methodology page: one for a small team building with AI coding tools, one for the effort agencies typically quote. Treat the result as a way to check a quote, not as a quote.

Why do you not ask for my email?+

Because this site does not sell development work and has nothing to follow up on. The estimate appears as you change the inputs, and the link to your estimate is the page address, which you can copy and share.

Where do the hourly rates come from?+

Each option under Who builds it names its source. The US in-house option uses BLS May 2025 wages for software developers, designers, QA testers and project managers, grossed up by the 70.0% wage share of employer costs in BLS ECEC June 2026. The agency options use Clutch's September 2026 pricing guides. The outsourcing regions use the Accelerance 2026 junior and senior bands.

Why is the range so wide?+

Three things widen it. Published rate bands are wide (Clutch lists US development companies at $50 to $99 an hour). Hours for an unscoped app are uncertain, so each column runs from below to above its hour estimate, the AI-native one more widely because the practice is newer. And the two columns themselves differ: one assumes AI-assisted working, the other follows the effort agencies publish in their own cost guides. Narrow the range by writing down a scope and getting a quote against it.

Does a bigger team make the app cheaper?+

No. In this calculator team size only changes the timeline, because the same hours are spread across more people. In practice more people also adds coordination time, which the 10% project management line is meant to cover for typical team sizes.

What does it cost to publish an app in the stores?+

Apple states that the Apple Developer Program annual fee is 99 USD. Google Play charges a US$25 one-time registration fee. Both are added to the first-year running cost when you choose a platform that ships to that store.
